Ayurveda is also popular among Brazilians and Sao Paulo has some centers where it can be practiced and learnt.
There are many intellectuals in Brazil who specialize in Indian subjects and teach them in the important universities of Brazil.
The University of Londrina has a good specialization on India in its Afro-Asian studies department.
Mahatma Gandhi is highly regarded in the country and the government has sought to teach his philosophy of non-violence to the police to improve its track record. A statue of Mahatma Gandhi is located in a prominent square in Rio de Janeiro. A group called the Filhos de Gandhi (Sons of Gandhi) participates regularly in the carnival in Salvador.
There are also many shops, particularly in Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro, where one can buy the Indian handicrafts, clothes and spices. Rua 25 de Marco in Sao Paulo, in fact, has got many such shops. While Sao Paulo has got at least six Indian Restaurants, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Paraty and Curitiba have got one each Indian Restaurant where one can sit and enjoy Indian cuisines with Indian `hot` spices.
There is enormous interest in Brazil in India's culture, religion, performing arts and philosophy.
ISKCON, Satya Sai Baba, Maharshi Mahesh Yogi, Bhakti Vedanta Foundation and other Indian spiritual gurus and organisations have their chapters in Brazil.
