Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards
The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards is an expression of honour by the Government of India to the Indian Diaspora. The award ceremony has been constituted to acclaim those NRIs and PIOs who have done exceptional work in their chosen field/ profession. The Award Ceremony is being organised by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs every year since 2003. The presentation of Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards is made on the third day of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas that is organised from 7th to 9th of January at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi every year.
The awards were earlier known as Bharat Samman Awards but subsequent to the recommendation of the High Level Committee on Indian Diaspora (HLCID), the name the changed to the present one. The name ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards’ truly reflects the focus of the awards.
Eligibility and selection criteria
Eligibility- Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards are reserved exclusively for Non-resident Indians and Persons of Indian Origin. As per the recommendations of HLCID, the PBSA are conferred on those NRIs and PIOs who have made outstanding contribution towards foresting better understanding abroad of India and its civilisation; for persons who have extended their supports to India’s causes and concerns; and those who made her proud by brilliant performance in their field of merit.
Nominations- The nominations of candidates for Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards are done after the mutual discretion of the panel consisting the following:
- Heads of Indian Diplomatic Missions abroad;
- PIOs who are MPs in their respective countries;
- Past awardees of the Gandhi Peace Prize or the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding
- Any other such awardees as may be proposed by the Jury cum Awards Committee
- The Head of any organisation that may be set up, pursuant to a separate recommendation of the HLCID
- The Secretary in charge of the NRI-PIO Division in the Ministry of External Affairs is the Member Secretary of this panel
Selection- The task of screening potential nominees for Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards is done by a Jury cum Awards Committee under the chairmanship of the Vice-President of India. The Minister of External Affairs is the Vice-chairman for these awards. The Awards Committee includes eminent figures nominated by the Prime Minister. The Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs is also a member of the Jury.
