O Embaixador da Índia no Brasil, Sr. Amitava Tripathi, juntamente com o Cônsul Geral da Índia em Sao Paulo, Sr. Deepak Bhojwani e demais autoridades paulistas, em frente à estátua de Mahatma Gandhi, presenteada pelo ICCR (Conselho Indiano de Relações Cuturais), representando o Governo da Índia, para a cidade de São Paulo, por ocasião do 55o. Aniversário da Independência da Índia.

On 15th August, 2002, 55th Anniversary of India's Independence, Sao Paulo witnessed an elaborate ceremony, in which the two-meter tall bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi installed atop a pedestal in the center of Sao Paulo, next to the State Legislative Assembly of Sao Paulo, was unveiled by Ambassador of India to Brazil, Shri Amitava Tripathi, in the presence of the President of the Legislative Assembly, Mr. Walter Feldman, the Deputy Mayor of Sao Paulo, Mr. Helio Bicudo and the Consul General of India in Sao Paulo, Mr. Deepak Bhojwani.

No dia 15 de agosto de 2002, 55o. Aniversário da Independência da Índia, Sao Paulo testemunhou uma maravilhosa cerimônia, na qual uma estátua em bronze de dois metros de altura, de Mahatma Gandhi, instalada em um pedestal no coração de Sao Paulo, próximo à Assembléia Legislativa do Estado de Sao Paulo, foi inaugurada pelo Embaixador da Índia no Brasil, Sr. Amitava Tripathi, na presença do Presidente da Assembléia Legislativa, Sr. Walter Feldman, do Vice-Prefeito da Cidade de São Paulo, Dr. Hélio Bicudo e do Cônsul Geral da Índia em Sao Paulo, Sr. Deepak Bhojwani.

The statue, which was gifted by the Government of India, was prepared and dispatched to Sao Paulo by ICCR, a gesture which was warmly and graciously received by the Legislative Assembly and the Municipality of Sao Paulo who have installed the statue in a prestigious park specially prepared for the statue with illumination, floral arrangements and a pedestal which dedicates the area in the memory of the Mahatma, to be called 93 Espaco Gandhi, 94 (Gandhi Place).

A estátua, que foi oferecida pelo Governo da Índia, foi preparada e despachada para Sao Paulo, pelo ICCR, num gesto que foi gentilmente aceito pela Assembléia Legislativa e pelo Município de São Paulo, que instalaram a estátua numa renomada praça, especialmente preparada para a estátua, com iluminação, paisagismo e pedestal apropriado, dedicando a área à memória de Gandhi, cuja área passou a se chamar "Espaço Gandhi".

The image and ideology of Mahatma Gandhi are very popular in Brazil and Sao Paulo, in particular. There was a large attendance at the function, including the Indian community, the consular corps of Sao Paulo, Indologists and Gandhians. The statue will serve as a monument to the pacific nature of Indian society, its friendship with the Brazilian, and as a symbol of Indo-Brazil friendship.

A imagem e a ideologia de Mahatma Gandhi são muito populares no Brasil e em São Paulo particularmente. Um grande número de pessoas compareceu ao evento, incluindo a comunidade indiana local, outras representações consulares em São Paulo, indologistas e gandhianos. A estátua será um monumento da natureza pacífica da sociedade indiana, sua amizade pelos brasileiros e será também um símbolo da relação entre Índia e Brasil.
